Invisible Cities

About the work: The original inspiration for the Invisible Cities series was Italo Calvino’s book of the same title. I wanted to explore his observations about constructions as a social constructs. Do we see other places as they really are or do we see them through the prism of what is known to be familiar to us? Does the built environment truly represent the people the created it?

To think about these themes and a narrative that employs circular logic, this series mixes together fragments of real and imaginary structures, past and present. Along the way, fences and railways tracks pop-up. Each city is composed of a cluster of 5” x 7” panels that have pen and ink drawings over thick layers of acrylic paint in a nod to the excavations and renovations of civilizations.
